If you moved that Alex out far enough to not be hidden, there would be a significant overhang that would make me very uncomfortable. I suppose you could use an Alex on either end of each desk (4 total), but then one would be hidden in the corner and essentially wasted. He said the whole desktop weighted about 250-300 lbs, at that point I'd start to be worried about the structural integrity of the Alexes once you add all of your stuff to it.Īside from making some kind of frame, I'm not sure how you would join the desktops together in any way that I would trust structurally. As I recall he waaaaaayyyyy over-engineered it by making a tubular steel frame for the entire desktop that was then mounted to the Alex drawers. Before you commit to the full desk, I'd recommend measuring it and laying it out in cardboard so you get a good visualization of just how big the 98" and 72" L desk will really be. I've honestly been amazed at just how big the 98" is by itself. I've had it for about 6 months and have not run into any problems yet with 2 monitors, my PC, a 36 inch tv, playstation, a couple of UCS Lego sets and various crap that I don't put where it belongs on top of it. I added two Adils legs to hopefully prevent any sag. Lastly, I have two of these cable organizers, one under each desk, for cable management.I looked at doing the same thing, but decided on just the single 98" Karlby with 2 Alex drawers. I also have the alex drawer in the middle BARELY under the top on the left, resting on about 1/2” or so, for extra support. All legs are 3” from the edge of the desk/corners, and my legs don’t hit them, even if I have the chair scooted all the way in (I’m 6’0” for size reference).
One in the middle of the short top on the left, two under the printer/flag at the end of the short side on each corner, and two under the long section. My wife’s side is on the left, and she wanted more drawers. The two on the right are “my side”, and I opted for the deeper bottom drawer.
